Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7- A Lost Legend!

Maruti Suzuki has been the affordable carmaker in the country, with that their sales numbers are also higher than their competitors. And you may find that there is currently no proper SUV with Maruti Suzuki. Would you believe Maruti had an real SUV with powerful engine and world-class features, well you have to because they had Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 in their line-up.

The Beginning :

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 was brought to India in the year 2003 through the Completely Built Up (CBU) route. It was the time when global cars were making entry into the Indian market. While Maruti Suzuki decided to bring Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7.

Grand Vitara XL-7 Engine Specs :

When all the cars in Maruti Suzuki’s line-up were coming with a 4-cylinder engine, Vitara XL-7 being a beast came with a 2.7 litre V6 NA engine producing 183bhp and 244.04Nm of torque, mated either to a 5-speed MT or 4-speed AT.  And the SUV turns 4WD and in a push of a button.

Grand Vitara XL-7 Features :

The Grand Vitara XL-7 being a performance as well as feature packed car. It had features which even modern suv’s dont get like Sunroof, Automatic Climate Control, Rear Aircon, power windows, power door locks, in-dash CD player with 7 speakers, 12-volt accessory socket, adjustable centre armrest with storage, rear window defogger, heated mirrors and much more.

Grand Vitara XL-7 Safety Features :

Don’t assume all Maruti’s are unsafe this guy had a whole lot of safety features such as four-wheel ABS with EBD, dual airbags at the front, DRLs, child seat anchors, side-impact door beams and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS),  a feature that is still not common in cars. Which made the car even more special.

Why Grand Vitara Failed in Indian Markets :

The main reason is that people couldn’t accept that the car was priced high at that time priced about ₹19.7 lakhs, that too being a Maruti, as they were focussed on making affordable cars. One reason why Vitara’s price is high is that the car was imported as CBU unit.

With that the cars fuel efficiency was also not so good considering the car is powerful and he had drinking problems. Further the car being a CBU unit it lacked availablity of spare parts.
