Toyota Innova History – India’s Most Reliable Car?

Toyota Innova has been in the market for more than 15 years now. Why is the car so famous amongst Indians? Well the car is known for its reliability and the the comfort which the car provide. Also you can see this car used my most of the celebrities in India which simply shows why this car is so special. Let’s see how it all begun!

First Gen Toyota Innova – 2005

The first generation Innova was launched on February 24th, 2005. The innova was launched to replace the legendary Toyota Qualis, it was the hardest part but the Innova did it just like that. The Innova has also got the name for the  first 3-row seating passenger car in India.

The first generation Innova was powered by a 2.5 L D-4D common-rail diesel engine that produced 102PS of power and 200Nm of torque and a 2.0L VVT-i Petrol engine that produced 136PS of power and 182Nm of torque.

The First Facelift – 2009

The Toyota Innova received it’s first update in 2009 bringing in more features and more luxury in the car. The facelift came with plush fabric seats, steering wheel controls, automatic climate control, MID Display and much more. With that the car was the best seller of Toyota of that time with 1.62 lakh units sold between 2005-2009.

Also with the rising of fuel prices and more CNG cars being introduced, Toyota also launched an CNG variant based on the same 2.0 L VVT-i Petrol engine. The CNG cylinder had an capacity of 12kg and had an cost of running less than Rs. 1.6/km which was 50% lesser than that of diesel engine. The CNG variant was just priced Rs 85000 higher than the petrol variant.

In 2010 the Toyota Innova received some mechanical changes as well as an inter-cooler was introduced.

Toyota Innova – 2012

The car got major cosmetic changes and was showcased in the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi. The changes include new front grille, new warp around headlamps, fog lamps, newly designed alloy wheels, a re-designed bumper and rocker moulding with three dimensional fog lamp which completely revamped the vehicle.

Rear side the car got wider and sharper with new body kit and came with rear view camera. On the interior car received light coloured theme, dual-tone seat covers, dark wood finish interiors, touch screen display with USB , Aux and Bluetooth, steering wheel with audio, MID, Bluetooth control switches and what not.

In September 2012, a new limited edition of the Innova was also launched called the Innova Aero which got a dual tone bumper and spoilers along with side skirts, roof spoiler and Aero badging to showcase the special edition.

Toyota Innova – 2013

The car recieved few cosmetic changes including a new front grille, chrome lining over fog lamps, new graphics and also added new Z variant in their line-up. The car had no changes on the power train.

Toyota Innova Facelift – 2015

The Toyota Innova received another update on January 5, 2015, still didn’t get any update on the mechanicals since the car didn’t need one though. The Innova sported an new grille, side-mouldings, ORVMs got indicators and much more. Considering safety the car got Abs and Airbag as standard on all variants.

Second Gen Toyota Innova Crysta – 2016

The Toyota Innova got an major update as Crysta which was based on the IMV (International Multi-purpose vehicle) platform which was lighter, stiffer and safer than the previous generation models.

The car was available in 4 trims G, GX, VX and ZX, While the ZX & GX trims got a 6-speed automatic transmission, while other variants came equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The new Innova Crysta came with an all-new GD powertrain options – a 2.4-litre GD, VNT Inter-cooler which produced 146.9bhp of power & 343Nm of torque and a 2.8-litre GD making 174.5bhp of power and 360Nm of torque respectively. Toyota also claimed that the MPV’s new GD diesel engines are 10% more fuel efficient than the old diesel power trains.

In terms of design the car was a regular Innova on steroids, it featured a new dual-slat chromed grille, new sweptback headlamps and fog lamps, integrated LED DRLs, re-designed bumpers and multi-layered bootlid which made the car taller and wider than the previous generation.

The interior also received major updates like automatic climate control, a 7-inch infotainment system with voice commands and Bluetooth connectivity, dual front and driver knee airbags, ABS, EBD, rear parking sensors, door ajar warning, anti-theft system, etc.

The higher trims, additionally, offered with an 8-inch entertainment system, wood finishing on panels, ambient LED lighting, vehicle stability control, curtain airbags, hill-start assist control and LED projector headlamps which bought almost everything you need.
