Heading forward these are some of the commonly asked questions, which we’ll try answering in this post.

  1. Why do bikes need Engine Oil?
  2. What are the different types of Engine Oil?
  3. How and When to change the Engine Oil?

Why do bikes need Engine Oil?

  • Lubrication: The basic purpose of engine oil is to make sure that the engine is very well lubricated, which in turn reduces friction among the pistons and normal wears are reduced.
  • Cooling: The hot engine transfers heat to the oil which then usually passes through a heat-exchanger keeping the engine cool.
  • Cleaning: All engine oils comprise two basic ingredients: base oil and additives. While the base oil helps in lubrication, the additives provide additional engine protection by helping in its cleaning process.

What are the different types of Engine Oil?

  • Mineral Oils (MO)

Mineral Oil is essentially a product or by-product of petroleum processing. Essentially the most basic type of engine oil, it is highly recommended for smaller capacity engines that do not impose a lot of mechanical pressure while running.

  • Semi-Synthetic Oils (SS)

As the name goes, semi-synthetic oil is a mixture between mineral oil and synthetic oil. Manufacturers have taken the best of both worlds. The high level of protection from mineral oil and high-performance aspects from synthetic oil. While, Semi-synthetic oil provide better engine defence at higher temperatures.

  • Fully Synthetic Oil (FS)

The fully synthetic oils are considered to be the best of the best. Constructed out of pure polymers based on factory-made oils, it is the exact opposite of mineral oil (you can say it is artificial and not made using any natural products). Mostly used in performance bikes.

How and When to change the Engine Oil?

Firstly How?

  • DIY

Things required: Drain pan, New oil, Microfiber cloth, required tools.

  1. Drain used Oil, Carefully open the Oil release bolt slowly and adjust the drain pan according to the flow of the Oil
  2. Close the bolt after cleaning
  3. Open the Oil filling cap
  4. Pour in the new Engine oil
  5. Close the cap and check if all the nuts and screws are tightened
  • Or Go to the nearest service centre and get changed

When to change?

  1. Motorcycles that use mineral-based oil should get changed at least every 3220km, or at least twice a year.
  2. Semi-synthetic oil should be changed every 8050 to 9656 km.
  3. Fully synthetic oil is best changed every 11265 to 12875km according to Rips & Rides.

What happens if you’re not changing the oil in the right time?

This can cause the engine to run less efficiently, and as time goes on the oil gets thicker creating more fiction causing the engine components to warp and wear out. And with time all the components will get damaged which will induce you to replace everything.
